"Vitra Eames Plastic Armchair RE DAW"

Design: Charles and Ray Eames, 1950

Vitra Eames DAW – the combined chair

Note: since the beginning of 2024 the seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs have, according to the manufacturer, been made from recycled post-consumer plastic. According to Vitra, the material comes from German household recyclable waste collection, mainly from used packaging. A characteristic feature of the new seat shells is the delicate speckling, particularly in the lighter colours, which results from the composition of the recycled material.

This iconic chair was presented as part of the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Like the other Plastic Chairs, the Plastic Armchair is based on a modular system that allows various seat shells to be combined with different bases. In the case of the Plastic Armchair DAW, a seat shell moulded in polypropylene with armrests is used. It is combined with the base of metal struts and maple wood to form the DAW, the Dining Height Armchair Wooden Base.

Plastic Armchairs at Vitra

The chairs were initially made of polyester resin. These models were the first plastic chairs to be produced in series. Vitra took over production of the chairs for Europe at an early stage but discontinued manufacture in polyester resin in 1993. Since 1999 the seat shells have been made of polypropylene.

The designer couple

Alongside their furniture design, Charles and Ray Eames are known for their contribution to architecture, photography and much more. They are among the most influential designers of the 20th century. Charles, born in 1907, married Ray Kaiser, born in 1912, in 1941, having met at the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan. Ray assisted her future husband in his work with moulded plywood. Together with Eero Saarinen, Charles won first prizes with his designs in the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition held by the Museum of Modern Art. Ray and Charles continued their work with moulded wood, and a remarkable success story took its course.

DAW Eames Plastic Armchair

Many combinations – for every room

A notable feature of the Plastic Armchair is the timelessness of its design. As with all chairs in the Plastic Chairs series, the design is as classic as it is modern. The manufacturer from Weil am Rhein offers a wide range of configuration options for the "Dining Height Armchair Wooden Base". Alongside the broad choice of colours, the chair can be assembled into an individual piece with full upholstery or Hopsak seat covers. The Plastic Armchair can thus be adapted to the setting in which it will be used. Its elegant, timeless design makes it versatile: whether in a hotel lobby, in the living room or in a meeting room – the armchair is an eye-catcher.

The Vitra original

The original Plastic Armchair DAW is produced for Europe and the Middle East by the manufacturer Vitra. You can buy the Vitra original in the pro office Shop.

Average body height has increased since the 1950s. Vitra therefore offers the Plastic Armchairs in a new height of 43 cm.

Care

For cleaning the plastic surfaces, a damp soft cloth with a neutral cleaning agent is recommended. Fabric covers can be vacuumed to remove lint and dust. For stains on the base or the seat cover, a damp soft cloth with a mild, neutral cleaning agent can likewise be used.
